Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen, is one of those books that sticks with you. I read it several years ago before giving it away in my pass-along book pile. The story takes place during the Great Depression. The story is in the point of view of Jacob Jankowski, a Polish American who is ready to finish up veterinary school. After suffering a great personal tragedy, Jankowski was unable to complete his exit exam and found himself suddenly homeless and destitute. In a desperate moment, he jumps a train and enters the world of the traveling circus. Jankowski's veterinary education enables him to become the circus "veterinarian". Jankowski discovers his one true love in this circus and, together, they train Rosie, the new elephant.
Water for Elephants is a tragic love story, full of suspense, despair, and laughs. This story made for an entertaining movie, starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. I passed this book several times in the thrift stores before I purchased it (again!) in order to use it for bracelets. The elephant charm really suits this bracelet because Rosie the elephant is such an important character to this story.
I won't give away too much of this story, I'll just say read it! Or, at least watch the movie. It's that good. Check out the bracelets here: http://bit.ly/2cut0zM and here: http://bit.ly/2bGgs2e
